Purity of Gases
A number of industrial gas companies sometimes use different names such as “High Purity” and “Ultra High Purity” when referring to the purity of their gases.
This can sometimes be a little misleading as the specification between the different manufacturers may differ slightly.
The easiest way to tell the purity of your gas, is by its purity rating number, the higher the number, the higher the purity.
2.5 (99.5%) purity 3.0 (99.9%) purity 4.0 (99.99%) purity 4.2 (99.992%) purity 4.5 (99.995%) purity 5.0 (99.999%) purity 6.0 (99.9999%) purity.
the importance of purging specialty gases
When using 4.5 or higher purity gases it is critically important when changing a cylinder to purge the gas to eliminate any contaminants.
The gas companies go to great lengths to ensure the purity of the gas inside the cylinder meets the required specifications, the specification for some gases could require impurities to be as low as 1 part per million.
When you change a cylinder atmospheric contaminants enter the gas system through the cylinder connection of the regulator.
Air in the top of the cylinder valve is trapped when you screw the regulator to the cylinder, this small amount of air is enough to contaminate the regulator and any down stream equipment.
If you have a purge system fitted before the regulator, you can isolate the regulator and expel the contaminated gas before it has the opportunity to turn your expensive ultra high purity gas into industrial grade gas.
Oxyset Services always recommend using purge systems with gases 4.5 purity or greater.
our basic range of scientific equipment
SPECIALTY GAS EQUIPMENT
Wall Mounted Cylinder Brackets – At no time are cylinders allowed to be freestanding, that is why we have a range of stainless steel cylinder wall brackets in a single, and twin cylinder configurations to fit cylinders “D”, “E”, “G”, 45kg LPG.
High Pressure Flexible Leads – We have PTFE lined stainless steel, as well as full stainless steel flexible leads available. They are available in different lengths and are suitable for gases up to 6.0 (99.9999%) purity.
Manifold Supply Panel Systems – There are several options when putting in a manifold supply system for scientific gases, you have four basic options:
- Retrofit Purge System with Regulator
- Single Inlet Supply Panel with Purge
- Twin Inlet Supply Panel with Purge
- Semi-Automatic Gas Change-Over Manifold System with Purge Valves and Alarm
Retrofit Purge Systems for Existing Regulators – If your current regulator is in good serviceable order, it may be possible to have it retrofitted to a purge system using a Protocol Station. A Protocol Station is a wall mounted, four way, high pressure, junction point. We fit it out with isolation valves, purge valves, high pressure flexible lead, and a solid connection to the high pressure inlet port on the regulator. With the regulator now mounted to the wall it is safe from damage from dropping and there is now a purge facility to protect the purity of the gas in use.
Single Inlet Supply Panels with Purge – Gentec supply panels are suitable for gases up to 6.0 (99.9999%) purity. They come in chrome plated brass as well as full stainless steel for toxic and corrosive gases. They come complete with wall mounting panel, regulator, isolation valve and purge valve. It can be wall mounted with the cylinder next to it and then connected directly to the lab equipment. The other option is to have this outside in a gas cage and pipe the gas into the building using stainless steel tubing and fitting a Regulated Outlet Panel or multiple Outlet Panels at the point of use. This is the cheapest option but it has it’s disadvantages in a busy laboratory. With multiple users dependent on the gas system, when it runs out of gas, everyone stops work until a new cylinder or pack is connected.
Twin Inlet Supply Panels with Purge – Gentec supply panels are suitable for gases up to 6.0 (99.9999%) purity. They come in chrome plated brass as well as full stainless steel for toxic and corrosive gases. They come complete with wall mounting panel, regulator, isolation valves and purge valves. It can be wall mounted with the cylinder next to it on either side then the regulator can be connected directly to the lab equipment. The other option is to have this outside in a gas cage and pipe the gas into the building using stainless steel tubing and fitting a Regulated Outlet Panel or multiple Outlet Panels at the point of use. This is a great option if a continuous uninterrupted gas supply isn’t required. They are also available for toxic and corrosive gases. They come complete with wall mounting panel, regulator, isolation valves and purge valves. Twin manual systems are very cost effective but you still have the added cost of lost production when you run out of gas.
Semi-Automatic Gas Change-Over Manifold System with Purge Valves and Alarm – Two high pressure connection leads are connected to the supply cylinders or packs, one “In Use” the other “In Reserve”. They are then connected to each side of a wall mounted semi-automatic gas change-over manifold with purge valves and alarm and safety relief valve system with pressure relief valve and manual isolation valve. Systems designed for fuel gases or oxygen will include flashback arrestors if fuel gas and oxygen or compressed air is mixed together down stream. These types of systems will give you an uninterrupted gas supply ensuring you never have to stop production.
Alarm Systems – Alarm systems comprise of a wall mounted audible alarm as well as a visual strobe light, when the alarm goes off you simply replace the empty cylinder or pack with a full one. Purge the new cylinder or pack, reset the control lever on the manifold, and reset the alarm.
Safety Relief Valve Systems – It is critically important as well as a requirement to have a safety relief valve system including an isolation valve, pressure relief valve and if required a flashback arrestor immediately downstream of the supply panel or manifold.
Regulated Outlet Panels – The panels provide fine gas control at the point of use, for gases up to 6.0 (99.9999%) purity. They are available in single, twin and triple regulator panel configurations ready to mount to the wall. They come with the following: Wall mounting panel, isolation valves, pressure regulators.
Bench, Surface and Wall Mounted Regulator Outlet Points – Bench Mounted Regulators are designed for point of use gas control. They come with a bench mounted upright column, isolation valve and adjustable regulator. Surface Mounted Regulators are designed to be mounted to the wall surface at point of use. The gas supply to the regulator can be mounted to the wall, eliminating the need to have the pipework within the wall. They come complete with wall mounting base, isolation valve and adjustable regulator. Wall Mounted Regulators are designed to have the supply pipework within the wall or through the wall. They come complete with wall mount, isolation valve and adjustable regulator.
Leak Detection Spray – All gas equipment should be leak tested on a regular basis to ensure there are no potentially dangerous or costly leaks. The use of soapy water solutions with some gases such as oxygen could lead to a fire or explosion as the soapy solution may contain hydrocarbons. For that reason it is vitally important that the leak detection fluid is safe for use with industrial and scientific gases and gas equipment. Gas Control is an advanced gas leak detection spray, specifically designed to find gas leaks in any type of gas equipment. It contains a special formulation to inhibit corrosion when used on copper, brass and steel. When applied the slightest leak will produce foam and bubbles indicating if the equipment is gas tight, even showing minute leaks that will not normally show up with soapy water solutions, especially important with gases such as Hydrogen and Helium.
